Description
This course is designed to take a deeper look into how to create therapeutic devices, equipment, tools and activities at a lower cost using common daily items in order for older adults to remain healthy, independent, and able to live safely in their home for as long as possible. The best way to make this happen is to help improve their functional abilities. Introducing additional pieces of therapeutic equipment will help older adults regain their strength, independence, and functional ability to return to their homes and age in place successfully. Providing education about using new equipment can help with fall prevention, independence with meal preparation, increase community engagement and social participation, maintain preferred lifestyles, and accessibility in the homes. Occupational therapy focuses on identifying and developing new interventions for people based on their needs. It is important to develop a list of therapeutic equipment for older adults as well as provide education to staff about appropriate use of these equipment. Cost is often a barrier that makes it difficult to purchase equipment. Occupational therapists can utilize their creative skills to develop or explore cost-effective tools or equipment. The benefits of using equipment for older adults are regaining strength, increasing independence ADLs, and conserving energy. Therapy staff can create activities for older adults to practice real-life situations and increase carryover and confidence at home. The proportion of the aging adult population is rapidly growing and the majority would prefer to live at home than other settings such as a retirement home or assisted living, and through the use of therapeutic equipment, it can increase their independence and quality of life.
