Studying English Online – My Journey
My name is Sofia Kahmal, and I’d like to tell you my story about how studying English online changed my life. It can do the same for you, and the best thing is that it doesn’t have to cost a single cent!
My Life – The Beginning
I was born in a small village in India in 1998. My parents didn’t have much, and we were what you would consider poor. My father was a farmer and my mother a housewife. We didn’t go hungry, but we never had anything more than the basics. However, we did have a house full of love and laughter, so in a way, you could say we had it all.
However, when I was 15 my father passed away. He was the sole breadwinner in our family, and since my mother had no job skills or experience, it fell on me as the eldest child to take care of her and my younger sister.
I dropped out of school and took a job as a helper in a small shop. My mother raised chickens and sold small items in the local market. Between us, my mother and I made enough to feed my family and keep a roof over our heads, but I wanted more from life, and I was determined to get it, even though I didn’t know how.
The Computer – How Things Started to Change
After several years, the owner of the store I worked in got a computer. I was curious to learn how to use it, and he was keen to let me do the work of computerizing the store. I asked him if I could take some eLearning courses on my lunch breaks and after my shifts, and he encouraged me.
I started to study English online on free websites which taught grammar and vocabulary. I took notes, studied for an hour per day, and began writing to an American pen friend who helped me refine my English skills.
It took me several years to gain enough confidence to attend English language courses locally. I found an evening course and was surprised to learn that I was one of the most advanced students. I wasn’t so confident in speaking, to begin with, but I found that my English writing skills were far ahead of most of the other students.
Our teacher told us about English courses on Udemy and Youtube, and as the months went by, I began to learn faster. Then, finally, my efforts began to pay off.
A Fateful Visitor – My Opportunity
I saw that a new call center was opening in a city near me, and I decided to apply for a position. I didn’t have any formal qualifications, but by now I was almost fluent in English thanks to the free online English courses I had been taking.
To my shock and delight, I got a call several weeks later inviting me to attend an interview. The lady on the phone complimented my English, so I sensed that I may be a strong candidate.
On the day of the interview, I was nervous, but I didn’t let my nerves cloud my judgment or get the better of me. I passed the interview with flying colors, and I was completely honest that the only education I had was some high school and the certificates from the online courses I had taken. They assured me that this wasn’t a problem, and shortly thereafter I was offered a position.
This position paid five times more than my salary at the store, so it was an easy decision. However, it did involve a move, and I was sad to leave my employer, even though he was understanding and happy for me. My mother decided to stay at home, and I send her a stipend every month to ensure she has what she needs to live in comfort.
Thanks to the simple decision I made to learn English online, I now have my own apartment, have traveled around India, Europe, and to Bahrain, and my family is secure and comfortable. I also met my husband at the call center, and have been married for three years now.
I can’t encourage you strongly enough to take advantage of the free educational opportunities available through Udemy courses. They were only one part of my English education, but they played an essential role. In fact, I still take free online courses today, and I even by some premium courses. I believe in lifelong learning, and I’ll never rest on my laurels.
Thanks for reading my story. If it inspired you, please do share it with your friends and family. Dare to dream, and you will be surprised how the universe conspires to help those who help themselves!
